Hype Hype Hype!

Every year, I get to work with teenagers at a summer camp. When I was a teenager myself, I was a volunteer team member that helped plan and execute the services each night.

We stole this idea from a youth organization one year called the “Hype Team.” I was a hype team member with two others. Our job as a the “hype team” was to… get hype. Build up a bunch of excitement and get everybody pumped for whatever it was that was about the happen.

We would interrupt the service, make announcements more exciting, build up excitement for other things that weren’t really all that exciting.

I was thinking this morning about hype and how we are effected by it.

-I’m seeing in the news all kinds of stuff about basketball player Gilbert Arenas.

-Last year everybody within 100 miles of a tv, magazine or computer was bombarded with the latest Jon and Kate info.

-A couple of weeks ago I was about to go crazy if I heard anything more about Tiger Woods.

-Did you know that when President Obama killed a fly during an interview, it made news?

I’m not saying that talking about any of that is wrong, it’s just that we talk about it a lot. Which is ok. It’s just interesting.

We get consumed with a lot of hype that can be distracting from the things that we SHOULD be hyped over.

What do you get excited about? What gets you hyped up?

What keeps you up at night?

I have a lot of things that I love.

Some are deep and profound::
-My fiancé
-My job
-My family
-The future

Others are simply and practical::
-A good Cavs basketball game
-Winning at a game.
-Hanging out with my friends doing nothing and loving it.

Most of those things are not going to excite you, but they excite me and that’s great, it’s important to me.

The whole point is to find something that you get hyped over.

What is it? Honestly. Do you have anything? I hope so. If not, take a weekend… go be by yourself and find it.

You can’t live well until you live for something/someone other than yourself.

Get Hype
